These fish are typical on any given day on the lower Sacramento River. Some of these photos are from the Pit River, the upper Sacramento and Hat Creek. Different places fish better at different times.

Upper Sacramento River

8/17...I have been fishing the upper Sacramento River over the last week and the clients had a lot of fun in spite of the fact that it was a bit warm. This time of year fishing can be tough going due to the heat but the higher than normal water levels kept the fishing good. Mornings and evenings were best and we did hit the evening 'hatch' both nights and a dozen or so wild rainbows were landed. A couple really nice ones stole our flies and a couple just ran down stream like they had been through the drill before.

We were able to have the river to ourselves almost all the time....I know a few less traveled roads....and we saw some of the other inhabitants of the north woods: bald eagles, osprey, deer and even a king snake...not to mention the wild rainbow trout.

The upper river (above the city park) was easy to wade and cross and fish in the 6" to 12" range were plentiful and cooperative. Mossbrea Falls was gorgeous as usual and makes for a cool lunch break.

The river below Flume Creek down to Dog Creek yeilded some nicer fish although the bigger water made the wading tougher. The fish cooperated though.

This weekend its back to the lower Sac and the usual casual drifting instead of hiking.
